The project is located at the former power station site within the Marchwood Industrial Park. Since the late 1980s, the site has remained largely unused, apart from some vehicle storage.The site was selected primarily because of its previous use as a power station. The site is ideal as it offers:
- Efficient re-use of brownfield land rather than development of a greenfield site;
- A location already designated for power station use in the local development plan;
- Access to existing infrastructure from the previous power station;
- Source of local, skilled labour during construction and operation.
Combined cycle power plants are smaller in overall size than conventional thermal power plants and, therefore, require less space.
Marchwood Power has been designed to minimize the visual impact on its surroundings. Physically, the plant comprises two elements: the main power station buildings and two chimney stacks. There will be no visible plumes from the plant’s chimney stacks under normal operations.
Particular attention will be paid to the visual appearance of all buildings and discreet colour schemes will be chosen to blend in with the surroundings. Tasteful landscaping will further reduce any visual impact.
Photomontages and computer graphics of the completed station are provided here.
