Brownfield

A development site that has been previously used for industrial purposes.

CCGT

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine.

Combustion

The process of burning.

Condenser

A device for reducing gases to their liquid or solid form by the abstraction of heat.

Condensate

A substance formed by condensation.

Greenfield

A development site that has not been previously used for industrial purposes.

Kilowatt (kW)

A measure of power demand equal to 1,000 watts. This is the power needed to light ten 100W bulbs simultaneously.

Kilowatt-hour (kWh)

A measure of power consumption equal to 1,000 watts used for an hour. This is the power needed to light one 100W bulb for ten hours.

Megawatt (MW)

One thousand kilowatts.

National Grid

The UK network used to transport electricity from where it is generated to where it is used.

Natural Gas

Gaseous mixture consisting mainly of methane, used extensively as a fuel.

Turbine

A type of machine in which the kinetic energy of a moving fluid, e.g. steam, is converted into energy by causing a bladed rotor to rotate.

Watt

The basic unit for the measurement of electricity. It is defined as the power which in one second gives rise to energy of one joule.
